PELL CITY — Three semi-pro soccer players from England visited Pell City this week, teaching more than 40 young players how to play and how to enjoy the game. The Pell City Parks and Recreation Department oversaw a Challenger Sports soccer camp that brought the players to town.

OXFORD — Cruz Skinner won in the Crate Late Model division at the Talladega Short Track June 14, his second win of the season. The 12-year-old dreams big but remains level-headed.

Jurgen Klinsmann has soccer fans excited about the U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT). While the outcome of Sunday’s game against Portugal was disappointing, most fans were merely hoping for a draw as the team went to halftime facing a 0-1 deficit.

PELL CITY — On a scorching Saturday at Pell City Sports Complex, the collective unit of area softball play ers, the 18 and under Velocity team, played in a National Softball Association (NSA)-sanctioned tournament with seven other teams. With players from Fayetteville, Childersburg, Sylacauga, Wadley and Randolph County, the Velocity won its first game and had a tie in the second game.

After a junior season that was similar to how he envisioned it playing out prior to the season, Cole Limbaugh has higher expectations for his senior season. The former Childersburg standout pitcher and current Samford Bulldog was able to work his way into the starting rotation this season.

The Alabama School for the Deaf Lady Silent Warriors track team earned the NDIAA National Championship for the 2013 season, and head coach Marvice Robinson earned National Coach of the Year.

Talladega football head coach Robert Herring learned from one of the best in the business. Herring grew up watching his dad on the sideline, played for his dad and coached for his dad at Oxford, which helped lead to his own journey as a head coach that began last season. After many years as an assistant coach, Herring took the helm for the Tigers in April 2013.

Pell City native Locke St. John was chosen on day three of the 2014 MLB Draft Saturday by the Detroit Tigers. The former Pell City Panther, who finished his final season as a Panther with 107 strikeouts, was selected in the 32nd round with the 970th overall selection. St. John is coming off a strong junior season at the University of South Alabama.

FAYETTEVILLE—Arby Hammonds smashes a hard ground ball toward Hailey Haynes, who brings her glove to the dirt, knocks the ball down and throws to first base. Hammonds is entering his fifth year as coach of the local Velocity travel ball team. The Velocity has some of the most talented players in the area.

PELL CITY—Thousands of anglers gathered at Logan Martin Lake Saturday for the largest bass tournament in the state of Alabama, the Mark’s Open.
