Springville senior Brant Brown signed a baseball scholarship last week with the University of North Alabama. Brown is the 18-year-old son of Josh and Tonya Smith of Springville.
Brown has played for the Springville Tigers since the seventh grade. He has been a three-year starter for the Tigers, playing right field all three years. Brown was selected to the All-Area team last season. He led the team in batting average with a .440 average and a .547 on-base percentage while driving in 32 runs.
Brown maintains a 3.1 GPA and plans on majoring in physical therapy.
Brown said he chose UNA because the city of Florence is cool.
“The campus is beautiful, and all the coaches are amazing and great,” he said.
Brown’s favorite MLB team is the Chicago Cubs, and it is his dream to play in the major leagues one day.
Brown said playing for Springville and Coach Jonathan Ford has been great.
“Winning has been fun,” he said. “We have made it deeper in the state playoffs each year.”
Ford said Brown is a sweet-swinging lefty.
“The term used today is ‘rake’, and he surely can,” Ford said. “He is a super competitor who cannot stand to lose. I believe it will be hard for the University of North Alabama to keep his bat out of the lineup.”
