Springville ninth-grade champions

The Springville Tiger ninth-grade boys defeated St. Clair County and Moody to win the St. Clair County Basketball Tournament.

Only three ninth-grade boys’ teams competed in the county tournament – Moody, Springville and St. Clair. After the Tigers defeated the Saints Friday, the championship game was set Saturday as Springville took on top-seeded Moody. The Tigers won the championship 59-27.

Springville 51, SCCHS 9

The Tigers held the Saints scoreless in the second half as they defeated St. Clair 51-9.

The score was 14-2 after the first quarter and Springville started the second quarter on a 7-0 run to make it 21-2. By halftime, the score was 31-9.

The Tigers outscored SCCHS 12-0 in the third quarter to make it 43-9.

Leading the Tigers were Pearson Baldwin and Ben Bianchi with 11 points each. Rece Gleason and Jake Ballard netted six points each while Steven Black had four points. Noah Hanrahan, Josh Hunnicutt and Larry Winston had three points each while Evan Paddock and Jake Goolsby scored two points each.

Leading the Saints were TJ Knox and Ian Newland with three points each. Luke Fondren added two points and Troy Barnett had a free throw. 

Springville 59, Moody 27

In the championship game, the Tigers jumped out to a 17-4 lead after the first quarter and did not look back, beating the Blue Devils 59-27. In the two games of the tournament, Springville outscored its opponents 110-36.

By halftime, Springville led 31-13.

Three Springville players scored in double figures with Winston leading the way with 11 points. Paddock and Ballard scored 10 points each. Bianchi and Baldwin scored eight points each while Hanrahan and Goolsby scored four points each. Rece Gleason and Cameron Williams scored two points each.

Leading Moody was Aidan Pyles with 11 points. Cole Dorsett netted six points while Ethan Hopper totaled five points.
