Springville grabs county championship

The Springville seventh grade basketball team won the St. Clair County Jr. High Basketball Tournament recently by beating Odenville 41-40 in overtime.

The Springville Tigers seventh-grade boys won the 2018 St. Clair County basketball crown Saturday with a 41-40 overtime win over the Odenville Saints.

It was the Saints who jumped out to an early 7-3 lead, but the Tigers went on a 5-0 run to take an 8-7 advantage with 2:30 remaining in the first quarter.

By the end of the first frame, the Saints were on top 9-8.

The Saints extended their lead to 17-10 in the second frame and then 21-10. Odenville won the scoring battle in the second quarter 18-11 as they took a 27-19 lead at intermission.

Springville found a rhythm in the third stanza. A key shot came with 1:44 remaining in that quarter as Zach Brown nailed a trey to give the Tigers a 32-31 lead. They led 34-31 after three quarters of play.

With the lead, Springville went into its four-corner offense trying to work the clock.

With 4:40 remaining, the Saints regained the lead at 35-34. Odenville hit another shot to make it 37-34 with 1:36 remaining.

With under a minute left, the Saints went into its own four-corner offense. With 50 seconds remaining, Odenville’s DJ Miller hit two free throws to make it 39-35 Saints. Springville hit a shot with 36 seconds remaining to make it 39-37 and then Ayden Walton hit the shot of the game, a trey with 21 seconds remaining that gave the Tigers a 40-39 lead.

With five seconds left, Odenville’s Dewayne Logan hit a free throw to tie the game at 40-40 to send it into overtime.

With 13 seconds remaining in overtime, Springville’s Hugh Windle hit a free throw to win the game for the Tigers 41-40.

Leading Springville to victory was Brown with 15 points. Walton finished the game with nine points, and Alex Cox scored eight points. Collin Lockhart netted six points while Brady Gillespie had two points. Windle finished the game with one point, but it was the game-winner.

Leading Odenville was Miller with 12 points. Jayce Mickens added 10 points while Logan totaled eight points. Josh Collins finished with six points and Jordyn Nelson had four points.
