RAINBOW CITY — Westbrook Christian delivered a balanced performance through the air and on the ground as the Warriors defeated the Ragland Purple Devils 28-6 last week.
Westbrook's John Ross Morgan had the hot hand early, scoring on a 15-yard run up the middle on the Warriors' opening drive of the game.
With 7:55 to go before halftime, Morgan was on the receiving end of a 13-yard touchdown pass from Jackson Cox to put Westbrook up 14-0.
While it looked like Westbrook was going to run the clock out in the last minute of the first half, Hunter Grimes broke a 48-yard run to get down inside the red zone, while a pass interference penalty on Ragland gave the Warriors a free play with no time left.
Cox found P.J. Wells for a 10-yard touchdown pass, and Westbrook led 21-0 at halftime.
Ragland had the lone score in the third quarter as Ladarious Spikes picked up a fumble on a broken play and ran 1 yard for a touchdown.
Early in the fourth quarter, Grimes had a first-down run inside the Ragland red zone called back for holding, but the Warriors ran the same play again. This time, Grimes took it 20 yards to the end zone to finish off the scoring.
Star of the Night
Westbrook's red zone defense. The game would have been much closer had the Warriors' defense not stopped Ragland four times inside the 20-yard line. Jackson Luttrell had back-to-back sacks to end a Purple Devil drive with 1:33 left in the second quarter. John Reese Bellew and David Barnett each covered red zone fumbles.
They Said It
“It was a great night by our offensive line,” Ragland head coach Derrick Sewell said. “They are starting to figure out what we’re trying to do up front and it showed in this game against a really good, big defensive line. Our running backs ran hard, and they are starting to see the creases. We want to run the ball, and that is no secret. We’re right on the edge of everyone knowing what to do and where to go. We get that right, and continue to play tough on defense, then we’re going to be a really good team.”
