Shoes for Christmas

TALLADEGA -- The Pell City/St. Clair County area has gone from worst to first in the Shoes for Christmas campaign standings.

After holding third place Sunday in the first update of the year for the annual Daily Home/St. Clair Times fundraiser, the Pell City/St. Clair area zoomed to the top of the standings with $1,110 in donations as of Wednesday, Nov. 28.

The Talladega area was second with $857 in donations, followed by Sylacauga/Childersburg, the previous leader, with $565.

According to Daily Home Business Manager Debbie Bussie, the goal for this year’s campaign is $7,500, a figure based on a three- or four-year average. A total of $2,532 had been received as of Wednesday.

The Daily Home and St. Clair Times are accepting cash, check and credit/debit card donations now through Friday, Dec. 7. The donation form in Thursday's print edition of The Daily Home will be on page 4A.

Mail checks to The Daily Home, P.O. Box 977, Talladega, AL 35161 -- or drop off donations at the paper’s offices in Talladega or Pell City, Atkinson Real Estate in Sylacauga (535 N. Broadway Ave.) or Childersburg City Hall (201 8th Ave. SW). The Talladega and Pell City offices can accept cash or check donations. The Sylacauga and Childersburg drop-off locations are for checks only. To make a credit card donation, call 256-299-2162.

The money collected will be sent to FIRST Family Services for families in north Talladega County, the Sylacauga Alliance for Family Enhancement for south Talladega County and Refuge Ministries in Pell City. Donors can specify which area they want their donation to go to. There is no minimum or maximum donation, and donations can be made in the donor’s name, in the name of someone else or anonymously.

Once all of the money has been collected, it will be disbursed to the various agencies, which have partnered with a local shoe store. The shoe stores will provide gift cards to be given to the children’s families.

Parents may also apply at each of those agencies, but Bussie said most children’s names come from their school teachers.
