Steele Jr. High School has a new principal. She is Kellie Peoples, and this is her first job as a principal.
She had been at Margaret Elementary since the school opened its doors in 2010 where she had been librarian for five years and assistant principal the past two years.
“This means I have the opportunity to be a leader for students and my community, to make a difference in the lives of these students,” she said. “I want them to value education and be productive citizens when they leave here headed into the ninth grade.”
Peoples said it’s a challenge to be principal for elementary and middle school students. Steele Jr. High has 174 students enrolled.
“The faculty has welcomed me with open arms,” she said. “We recently moved into the community, building a house in Beason Cove. I vested here and I want to see this community grow. I want to see these students be the best they can possibly be.”
Before Margaret Elementary, Peoples was the librarian at Southside Elementary School. With her husband being a coach and now an administrator at Gadsden City, they have moved around quite a bit.
“I have taught pre-K, second grade, fourth grade and sixth grade,” she said. “I went from classroom teacher to the library.”
Peoples has 15 total years in education. She and her husband, Ray, have two children – Jesse and Jacob – and both are students at Jacksonville State University.
Peoples has a bachelor’s degree in elementary education, a master’s and Ed. S in library media, a dual certification in educational leadership and she is national board certified.
