PELL CITY -- Five animals, three dogs and two cats, were killed in a house fire Thursday.
Pell City Deputy Fire Marshal Caleb Walker said the blaze on the 100 block of Holiday Estates Drive, in the Cropwell community, was reported at 12:32 p.m.
He said there was heavy smoke and fire when firefighters arrived on the scene.
Walker said the fire was under control in about 10 minutes, and firefighters contained the blaze to one room, where the fire originated. He said the fire appeared to have started in a garage that was converted into a living space.
Walker said the fire could have started from a space heater, but the actual cause is still under investigation. He said one person was at the residence at the time of the fire but escaped the blaze unharmed.
Walker said some kittens inside the residence were saved.
He said the Red Cross was notified for aid and assistance for the occupants.
