It has been discussed for several years and now it looks as if a new high school football field is about to be built at St. Clair County High School in Odenville.

At Monday’s St. Clair County Board of Education meeting, Coston General Contractors of Bessemer was awarded the bid to start the earthwork. The BOE unanimously approved the base bid of $413,000 and Alternate bid #5 to add Bermuda sod at no cost.

Lee Bryant with Lathem & Associates said what is included in the base bid is field grading, storm drainage, water supply for water hoses, along with conduits and utilities that will serve the future lights so they will never have to trench the field again.

“Plus, there is some construction for the track in this base bid,” Bryant said. “One thing we will have to cross sooner or later is how we will irrigate the sod.”

During this long process, there had been people in the Odenville community who have wanted to help get this project started.

“I’m not sure what these people can bring to the table, whether it’s earthwork, fencing or irrigation,” Bryant said. “I’m certain this contractor would be willing to consider it. If people want to donate work or material, that would save some money.”

Board member Terry Green said there have been some promises made in the past, and they want to take advantage of that.

“This will get us started, right?” Green asked.

“That’s the intentions,” Bryant said. “This is the best way to start it. With the way it’s planned now, we will not have to undo later.”

“It’s past due, so let’s get it started,” Green said.

Bryant said the start date will be as soon as the contract is signed.
