TALLADEGA -- Work is underway on the phase one renovation of the Welch-Coleman building off the Square in Talladega. Owner Kevin Smith filed documents with the Historic Preservation Commission last year saying he planned to remove a large awning and take the cladding off the sides of the building, possibly exposing numerous windows that have been covered for decades.

The façade will be replaced once the rotten wood has been removed.

Smith is also renovating the Braswell’s Furniture building and has plans for other downtown properties, including an ambitious plan to bring a makers’ space and small business accelerator, known collectively as the Fellowship Factory, to downtown Talladega.
