HOWELL’S COVE -- Talladega County Central High School’s girls basketball team defeated Cornerstone-Birmingham 43-31 on Friday night.
Lady Fighting Tigers head coach Robert Duncan’s squad fought through rocky play and a spirited rally from a Lady Eagles team that trailed 30-13 after three quarters.
“This was a good win for us,” Duncan said. “Every good team, they have to have some ugly wins. Tonight was one of those ugly wins that we get, but I think we grew a little bit in character because we could have easily laid down and just let them have it because we weren’t playing very well.
“I think our team grew up a little bit tonight. We still gutted out a tough win against a very athletic team.”
Cornerstone had its best quarter of the day at the end, but 17 points wasn’t enough to offset the damage done.
Neither team mustered much offense in the opening stanza, but TC Central did just enough to grab a 5-3 lead. The Lady Fighting Tigers carried a 16-9 advantage into the intermission.
Devona Gover led TC Central with 10 points, while Davionna Stockdale and Ja’Miya Whitson both chipped in eight.
Kendra Peterson provided the most points for Cornerstone with nine. Benee Fincher added eight.
