TALLADEGA -- Talladega police are investigating a home invasion on Shocco Springs Road targeting a couple in their 70s.

According to Capt. Patrick Thornton, the couple were awakened by a burglar alarm at around 2 a.m. Friday. They awoke to find what they described to investigators as two males wearing Halloween masks of zombies or something similar. One of the men was armed with a pistol and demanded any gold the victims had in the house as well as the woman’s purse.

After searching the bedroom area, the suspects began rifling through the furniture and stole a .38 caliber pistol and assorted jewelry. One of the men went into a bathroom and took the male victim’s wallet, which contained cash, credit cards, identification and other items. The other suspect went into a closet and took additional jewelry.

When officers arrived on the scene, Thornton said, they discovered a set of double doors in the back of the house had been forced open and found a trail of dropped jewelry that they were able to follow into the tree line. The trail ended there, however.
