MUNFORD -- The Talladega High School football team scored 13 unanswered points to defeat county foe Munford 20-10 on Friday night at Munford Stadium.
It was the Tigers’ first win of the season and their first time defeating Munford since 1993. Talladega was on a four-game losing streak to the Lions.
“A win, there is nothing like it,” Talladega head coach Ted Darby said. “We needed that win. We get into region play next week. We play a tough, 2-0 Childersburg team.
“We cramped up big time tonight. I’ve never been a part of a game where we cramped up so much. We will take it (a win) how we get them. It was a hard-fought game on both sides. Munford has a heck of a football team. I am proud of our boys, they did a heck of a job.”
The teams traded scores in the first half.
Talladega scored on its second possession. Michael McGregor capped off an 82-yard drive with an 11-yard touchdown run to make it 7-0.
The Lions scored the next 10 points to take a 10-7 in the second stanza.
Munford’s defense scored the team’s first points on a safety to cut the Tigers lead to 7-2 with 6:40 left in the opening period.
In the second, the Lions scored their first and lone touchdown of the season. Jay Tuck scrambled to his right and found LJ Flint, who was able to get behind a Talladega defender for a 89-yard touchdown. Justin Sistrunk ran in the two-point conversion to give Munford a 10-7 lead.
Munford’s lead, however, was short-lived. Scales connected with Chaztin Tanner for a 88-yard touchdown with 5:54 left in the half.
In the third, Nigel Scales connected with Tanner for acrobatic 26-yard touchdown reception. The senior receiver reached in front of a Munford defender to tip the ball up to himself, which allowed him to catch it in the end zone for the score. The point-after attempt was good to make it 20-10.
