Colby Seth Cheatwood was charged with destruction of property by a prisoner.

TALLADEGA COUNTY -- A Talladega man has been charged with destruction of property by a prisoner after smashing a telephone receiver at the Talladega County Metro Jail last month.

Colby Seth Cheatwood, 26, had previously been arrested on misdemeanor domestic violence charges, according to jail records.

According to Sgt. Mike Jones, Cheatwood was using a telephone in the jail Oct. 9 when he became agitated and repeatedly slammed the receiver onto the hook. The receiver broke, causing about $225 in damage to the phone.

Jones said there was never any question Cheatwood was responsible for the damage, but the phone had to be sent off to determine the extent of the damage.

Cheatwood’s bond was set at $2,500, and jail records indicate he was released Friday.

Destruction  of property by a prisoner is a class D felony in Alabama, punishable upon conviction by one year and one day to five years in prison.
