TALLADEGA -- During Monday’s Talladega County Board of Education meeting, 19 schools and teachers were awarded $12,333.14 by the Talladega County Education Foundation through its Dr. Lance D. Grissett grant program.

Superintendent Dr. Suzanne Lacey congratulated each of the winners and noted the grants were “a reflection of the continuing instructional needs that are taking place in the classroom.” The award recipients included:

School-wide winners: “PAWSitive Patches,” B.B. Comer Elementary, in the amount of $1,968.00; “Go Team, Go Green,” Munford Middle, in the amount of $2,000; “We can always count on Talladega County Education Foundation,” Talladega County Central High School, in the amount of $1,999.52.

Teacher winners: “If you give a child a robot… you S.T.E.M.ulate their brains,” Jamie Harbin, B.B. Comer Elementary, in the amount of $391.68; “Edvantage for AP chemistry,” Michael Pope, B.B. Comer High, in the amount of $400; “Making space for makerspaces,” Belinda O’Toole, Childersburg Elementary, in the amount of $399.39; “Using Dr. Seuss to understand history,” Carol Edwards, Childersburg High, in the amount of $400; “Lego Club: building up students brick by brick,” Lori Bloodsworth, Childersburg Middle, in the amount of $400; “Kindergarten reading roundup,” Amy Nelson, Caprice Buttram and Crystal Moore, Fayetteville Elementary, in the amount of $398.93; “Lego robotics take students to new digital economy,” Stephanie Brooks, Fayetteville Middle, in the amount of $400; “Eye spy a whole new world,” Donna Igo, Fayetteville High, in the amount of $400; “Physical education technology,” Sherry Hattaway, Skylar Mansfield and Todd Garrison, Lincoln Elementary, in the amount of $400; “Readers are leaders: becoming proficient independent readers,” Jennifer Pounders, in the amount of $400; “Apples for apples,” Julie Hibbs, Sycamore Elementary, in the amount of $400; “Put it in their hands,” Quentin Lee and Tim Gallahar, Talladega County Central High, in the amount of $400; “Epic Lego Wall,: Kim Broadhead, A.H. Watwood Elementary, in the amount of $400; “So you think I’m a bully,” Sherry Jackson, Winterboro Elementary, in the amount of $400; “Bags that keep on giving,” Cecilia Johnson, Winterboro Middle, in the amount of $400; “Wheeler’s book club,” Tina Wheeler, Winterboro High, in the amount of $375.62.

In other business, the board:

  • Recognized Rhonda Jennings, itinerant school LPN, B.B. Comer Elementary School; and Sheryl Goodson, clerical assistant, Talladega County Central High School;

  • Deemed February as “Career Technical Education Month;”

  • Approved the following personnel changes:

New hires

Stacey Fleaman, special education instructional assistant, Childersburg Elementary; Beth Gardner, special education instructional assistant, Childersburg Middle; and Scott Vermilyer, custodian, Childersburg Middle;

Leaves-of-absence

Katelyn Alldredge, special education teacher, Childersburg Middle; David Deloach, custodian, Childersburg Middle; Samantha Lathem, fourth-grade teacher, Munford Elementary; Paige Meads, fifth-grade teacher, Childersburg Middle; and Shae WIlliams, speech pathologist, Munford Elementary;

Resignations

Laura Taylor, third-grade teacher, Childersburg Elementary;

  • Approved the following out-of-state trip request: 40 students from Winterboro High School to travel to the CNN facility in Atlanta on Feb. 14;

  • Approved the following financial reports for the month of December: Total revenue in the amount of $8,373,890.19; total expenditures in the amount of $6,103,571.79; total utilities in the amount of $105,982.78;

  • Recognized fellow board members for January’s “Board Member Appreciation Month;”

  • Approved annual district school bank accounts; and

  • Announced the next meeting will be Wednesday, March 1, at noon inside the Central Office.
