TALLADEGA -- Talladega College’s “Opening Convocation” on Wednesday paid tribute to Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and recognized Black History Month. The Honorable Judge Agnes Chappell served as the event’s keynote speaker. Chappell is the first black woman to practice law in Jefferson County, Alabama. She has been in the legal profession for more than 38 years.

Chappell is a municipal judge for the city of Birmingham. She presides over the misdemeanor and domestic violence court, the first therapeutic court, for the city of Birmingham. Chappell is a graduate of Shades Valley High School, the University of Alabama and the University of Alabama School of Law.
