SYLACAUGA -- The Sylacauga Community Playhouse will present multiple public performances of “Tom Sawyer” at the B.B. Comer High School Auditorium later this month.

“Tom Sawyer is a force of nature – whether he’s sneaking out of his Aunt Polly’s house at night to visit the graveyard, duping his playmates into white-washing a fence, stealing a kiss from the ravishing Becky Thatcher, or taking a stand against the murderous Injun Joe,” a press release reads. “Tom’s small-town adventures on the banks of the Mississippi are the magical essence of childhood, a joyous leap into the great river of time and memory.”

The production is Ric Averill’s stage adaptation of Mark Twain’s, “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer.”

The eight performances are slated for the weekends of Feb. 16-18, and Feb. 23-25.

The Friday and Saturday evening shows start at 6:30. The Saturday and Sunday matinees begin at 2 p.m.

In addition to the public performances, the Playhouse is presenting the production to an additional six schools.

“Thanks to grants provided by Nemak and Resolute Forest Products underwriting the expense of the school performances, students are able to attend at a discounted ticket price,” SCP board member Amy McDonald said.

The Playhouse’s latest project is directed by LaKeisha Crocker and Dan Nixon.

McDonald notes the production consists of 43 cast members and more than 20 crew members -- all of which are volunteers.

“Even if you are not interested in acting on stage, there is still a place for you at the SCP. There is always a need for set builders, painters, costume designers, seamstresses and even people with accounting and bookkeeping skills. Whatever your talent or skill is, I am sure the SCP has a place for you,” McDonald said.

The mission of the Sylacauga Community Playhouse “is to provide theatrical education, experiences and quality entertainment throughout the community by creating theatre arts opportunities for all ages and those who are intellectually and physically challenged.”

Tickets are $15 in advance or $18 at door. Advanced tickets may be purchased at the Maxye Veasey Senior Center, the Sylacauga Chamber of Commerce, by phone at 256-369-3003 or online at

B.B. Comer Auditorium is at 801 Seminole Ave. in Sylacauga.
