SYLACAUGA – The Arts Council is celebrating 45 years of supporting arts in the community for students and adults. The celebration will be part of the nonprofit organization’s annual dinner theater on Thursday, Feb. 8.
Featured performers are the popular musical and comedy group Three on a String. Three on a String is also celebrating its 45th anniversary.
Summer Newman Ernst, the president of Sylacauga Arts Council, said it is exciting the Arts Council and Three on a String each have been supporting arts with their own brand of entertainment.
Tickets for the dinner theater are $25 each. Ernst said you couldn’t find an evening of entertainment and great food outside Sylacauga for this price.
“It’s a great price for a concert and dinner. Hickory Street Café is providing the food. The dinner theater is a perfect opportunity for the men out there to purchase tickets for Valentine’s Day. The theater seems to always be around Valentine's,” she said.
Tickets can be purchased at B.B. Comer Memorial Library, Chamber of Commerce, Magnolias or from any Arts Council member. Tables of eight are available and may be reserved when tickets are purchased.
Ernst said the Arts Council does so much in the community from Arts in Education to the Marble Festival.
The Arts Council is a component of the State Council on the Arts and Humanities. According to its history, the purpose of the Arts Council is to develop, promote, coordinate and generally enhance the cultural atmosphere in the community.
The organization said it is only through members’ help and interest along with civic-minded individuals, that the Arts Council has been a success since its formation in 1973.
The history also explained it is only through the public’s cooperation that the cultural life of Sylacauga can grow and that Sylacauga can become “the city with something extra.”
Three on a String provides musical entertainment and humor. There have been personnel changes through its 45 years. Jerry Ryan and Bobby Horton started performing a duet at the Horse Pens Forty near Ft. Payne. The group eventually evolved into the four members it has today – Ryan and Horton, Brad Ryan and Andy Meginniss.
Three on a String has performed with symphony orchestras in several states, and opened for Red Skelton, Barbara Mandrell, Jeff Foxworthy, George Lindsey, Ray Stevens and many more stars.
These four entertainers enjoy sharing their talents with audiences.
Ernst concluded anyone looking for a birthday gift, date night or Valentine’s Day, the Arts Council has just the ticket.
“Tickets are $25 each. This covers the show and dinner on Feb. 8 with the performance of Three on a String at J. Craig Smith Community Center. What better fun,” Ernst said.
