Losses piling up

After winning their first three games of the season, the Victory Christian Lions are in the midst of a four-game losing streak.

Friday night, they lost to the Spring Garden Panthers 39-12 and fell to 3-4 overall, 1-3 in Class 1A, Region 5.

The Panthers scored the first two times they had the football to take a 14-0 lead after the first quarter. The touchdowns came on two 5-yard runs.

Victory Christian put together a drive late in the first quarter that stretched into second. The Lions drove the ball to the Panther 6-yard line, but a 23-yard field goal attempt by Abraham Sargent was blocked.

Spring Garden drove 80 yards in eight plays, with the touchdown coming on a 25-yard pass as the Panthers opened up a 20-0 lead.

Two plays later, Spring Garden intercepted a Victory Christian pass and returned it 81 yards for a touchdown to make it 26-0.

With nine seconds left in the first half, another Victory Christian pass was intercepted and returned 65 yards for a score, pushing the halftime margin to 33-0.

Victory Christian finally got on the scoreboard late in the third quarter on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Sargent to Aaron Jernigan to make the score 33-6.

Spring Garden scored three plays into the fourth quarter on a 25-yard run to make it 39-6.

With 33 seconds remaining, the Lions scored on a 2-yard run by Ashton Love.

With the win, the Panthers improved to 6-1 overall and 4-0 in region play.
