TALLADEGA COUNTY -- A Ragland man was arrested in Talladega early Wednesday and is being held as a fugitive from justice from Bay County, Florida.
Robert Ray Lewis, 50, was pulled over by Talladega police after weaving between lanes on Old Shocco Road. According to Lt. Jimmy Thompson, Lewis also had two passengers in the car with him when he was pulled over. The passengers were eventually released.
Thompson said the officer detected a strong odor of alcohol on Lewis, who was nonetheless able to pass a field sobriety test. He was driving on a revoked license, however.
Thompson said the officer eventually determined Lewis was wanted on a charge of probation violation in Bay County, and he was arrested as a fugitive. He added Lewis appeared to be on probation for felony battery, possibly dating back to 2014.
Florida law defines felony battery as intentionally causing bodily harm to another person by unwanted touching or striking. It carries a penalty of up to five years in prison upon conviction.
Bay County’s county seat is Panama City.
Lewis is being held in the Talladega County Metro Jail without bond. He will likely appear before a judge sometime Thursday and either waive or demand an extradition hearing.
