LINCOLN -- Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church Inc. in Lincoln will honor the Rev. Joseph Stafford Rowser Jr.’s 24th anniversary as pastor with a special second Sunday program March 11 at 3 p.m. Everyone is welcome to attend.
The guest church will be Mt. Cleveland Missionary Baptist Church of Talladega, the Rev. Jerry Jones, pastor. The theme will come from 1 Timothy 5:17-18: “The pastor who preaches, who teaches and who pastors all the sheep,” according to a flier announcing the event.
Pulpit conductors will be the Rev. Jesse Montgomery Jr., retired pastor of Sycamore Baptist Church in Talladega, and the Rev. Joseph Rowser Sr., retired pastor of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church #1 in Ridgeville and “one of the best fathers a son could have,” according to the flier.
Rowser Jr. has been a minister for 42 years and a pastor for 38. Among his accomplishments are being the first pastor to serve as moderator of the Rushing Springs District Missionary Baptist Association from 1999 to 2010 and first pastor to serve as executive secretary treasurer of the Alabama State Missionary Baptist Convention Inc. from 2006-10. He is married to Sis. Edith Marie Hoyett Rowser, who is also a church musician and choir director.
Among his accomplishments as moderator of the Rushing Springs District was the successful effort to recruit Talladega Quality Health Care, a clinic operated by Quality of Life Health Services, and fundraising and boosterism for Talladega College. He also worked with the Rev. Hugh Morris to revive the Talladega County Chapter of the NAACP.
This year’s celebration will also be the official kickoff to Pine Grove Missionary Baptist Church’s sesquicentennial. The 150th anniversary of the establishment of the church is November, Rowser said.
During that time, the church has had 15 pastors altogether. Rowser said he lacks only six more years of service for tying the record for longest serving pastor.
