PELL CITY – Construction of the new $9 million entertainment center appears to be on track for a Christmas season opening.
“We are shooting for Thanksgiving, but we’re looking to turn it over between Thanksgiving and Christmas,” said Johnny Walker, the Blalock Building Company superintendent who is overseeing the construction project, which includes a seven-screen movie theater and 12-lane bowling alley.
He said the new facility will also feature an elevated “ropes course” for climbing. The course will be in a portion of the expansive front lobby.
Tyler Sloan, the assistant superintendent for the project, said the movie theaters will be on the east side of the facility, while the bowling alley will be on the west side.
“You could spend all day here, go bowling and hit a movie,” Sloan said.
Walker said his company is doing its best to make sure the new entertainment center opens for the holidays.
“It’s coming along,” Walker said. “We still have a ways to go, but we’ll get there.”
He said workers poured concrete in individual theaters Wednesday and set up electrical transformers Thursday at the site. Walker said the work crew fluctuates daily, but generally Blalock has about 30 workers each day on site.
“There were probably 50 here yesterday when we were pouring concrete inside the (theater) auditoriums,” Walker said.
The new theater is on Vaughan Lane, across from The Home Depot.
Sloan said the facility is 47,792 square feet.
“We’re getting close to starting the finishes,” Walker said. “It’s coming together pretty quick.”
He said the movie theaters, all together, can accommodate about 800-900 guests. Walker said the individual theaters will seat 100-150 people. The seating is power leather recliners.
Construction of the theater began last November.
Officials said the lobby will also feature a Dippin Dots Ice Cream station, a gourmet pizza pub café and a full adult bar with imported wines, spirits and local draft and craft beers on tap.
The theater is owned by Premiere Cinema Corporation, which is headquartered in Big Spring, Texas. The company is one of the largest privately held movie theater corporation in the U.S., with 312 screens at 29 locations in six states -- Texas, New Mexico, Alabama, Florida, Mississippi and South Carolina.
