PELL CITY -- The Pell City Civic Center was closed Monday in preparation for a $2.3 million renovation to the center.
City workers were completing demolition work near the front entrance, and items from rooms and offices inside the civic center were moved to the gymnasium.
Parks and Recreation employees have moved offices to the stage in the gymnasium, while officials prepare for a 10-12 month closing of the civic center.
Signs on the doors at the civic center read, “Pell City Civic Center closed until further notice due to renovations.”
City Manager Brian Muenger said the city will temporarily move weight room equipment to the former Boys and Girls Club on 19th Street, so Police and Fire Department employees can use the workout equipment until it is traded for newer exercise equipment after the renovation of the civic center is completed.
The city has solicited bids for the project and will have a walk-thru of the civic center for companies that are bidding on the renovation project.
Muenger said Tuesday the city is scheduled to open bids on April 3, and construction should begin by May.
Parks and Recreation Director Harold “Bubba” Edge said the multi-million-dollar project includes improvements around the civic center and the addition of two new tennis courts, new lighting for existing tennis courts and a new tennis office, which will have restrooms and storage space.
Additional upgrades to tennis facilities should bring the price tag for the total project at $2.7 million.
Work to the civic center includes new heating and air units, and a new warming kitchen next to the multipurpose room towards the back of the civic center.
Workers will install new restrooms where the current weight room is located.
The entrance to the civic center is expected to be more open, and visitors will be able to see the gym through glass windows when they first enter the facility.
Edge said the small meeting room to the left of the entrance will become an arcade or game room. The director’s office will become a vending area and the conference room will remain in place.
A new fitness room is being constructed on the west side of the civic center, along with a new weight room.
The project also includes a new parking lot on the west side of the civic center and improved access to recreation facilities and to Pell City Lakeside Park, as well as improvements to existing parking areas.
