PELL CITY -- Dylan Thomas, a Pell City High School student, was recognized Monday night as the Pell City Boys and Girls Club Youth of the Year for 2017.

“He’s a great kid,” said Pell City Boys and Girls Club Unit Director Lacy Mills. “It’s been fun watching him grow up.”

Thomas is a leader who helps and encourages younger children, helping them excel in sports, particularly the Baseball Triple Play Program, Mills said.

Thomas was one of 12 candidates from the Pell City Boys and Girls Club who were considered for the Youth of the Year honor before the field was narrowed to three candidates. Area business leaders helped select Thomas from his speech about how the Boys and Girls Club had impacted his life. He was also interviewed by the city manager.

“… Dylan Thomas is one of Pell City’s youth who has reaped the rewards of being a member of the Boys and Girls Club …,” said Mayor Bill Pruitt.

Thomas, a sophomore at Pell City High School, has a 4.0 GPA and has been an active member of the Beta Club since he was in the seventh grade.

Out of 400 possible candidates, Pruitt said Dylan was named as one of the Final Four in the Boys and Girls Clubs of Central Alabama Youth of the Year of 2017. Thomas was honored at The Club in Birmingham as one of four candidates who competed for the top regional honor.

Councilman Jay Jenkins said Thomas delivered an impressive speech at the event of 350 people.

“He did extremely well,” Mills said. “He presented the speech that he wrote.”

Pruitt presented a special proclamation to Thomas at Monday night’s council meeting.

“Now, therefore, it is proclaimed by the Mayor, City Council and City Manager of the City of Pell City, that the city is extremely proud of Dylan Thomas for his accomplishments and wishes him much success in his future endeavors,” Pruitt said as he read the proclamation aloud.

Thomas has been with the Pell City Boys and Girls Club for six years and is a “Counselor in Training.”

“He is hoping to work here this summer,” Mills said.

Pell City High School Head Wrestling Coach Del Hufford said he has no doubt that Thomas can and will do anything he sets his mind to. Thomas was a first-year wrestler under Hufford’s wrestling program.

“He is an unbelievable young man,” Hufford said. “His work ethic and drive stood out to us coaches all year long.”

Thomas was a good teammate, he said, always supporting and picking up his teammates.

“He’s very committed to what he does,” Hufford said. “He has unbelievable drive and very high character.”
