PELL CITY -- There's always something going on at Lakeside Park in Pell City. This weekend, it was the first paddling of the LMLPA (Logan Martin Lake Protection Association) Paddle Derby.
The derby is a family fun event open to all ages in which participants registered any non-motorized boat and raced others on an out-and-back course. Winners were presented with medals on an Olympic-style podium and took home bragging rights.
Several organizations and businesses participated, including SUP Alabama, ERA King and Rivers Edge Marina. The event is a fundraiser for the nonprofit LMLPA, with proceeds going towards the purchase and installation of solar powered lighted buoys to mark hazards on the lake.
A classic car show and raffle were also part of the festivities, which in all raised more than $3,000.
