PELL CITY -- Goodfellas, featuring jazz duo Jeff Lopez on the saxophone and vocals and Ken Talley on the piano, will perform at the Pell City Public Library at noon next Wednesday for the library’s Wild & Wonderful Wednesday program, according to a press release.
“They bring a lifetime (more than 30 years) of musical talent and experience, performing jazz favorites that everyone will recognize and enjoy,” said library Assistant Director Susan Mann, who oversees the adult reading program, in the release.
Lopez was tutored on the saxophone by his grandfather, Otis “Nappy” Haslip.
While a student of Hampton University, he attended national jazz workshops with Ellis Marsalis and Count Basie. He played for three years at the Disney World Resort and the Dixie Jazz Cats as a featured act specializing in Dixieland music.
Lopez served as director of music at the Tides Inn Resort in Irvington, Virginia, for five years.
In Birmingham, Lopez has provided services on independent recording endeavors for Cleve Eaton, Five O’Clock Charlie, Dick’s Hat Band and others. He has also performed live on saxophone with many Birmingham-based bands and with such musical greats as Eaton and American Idol winner, Taylor Hicks.
Talley became the pop choral musical arranger for the nationally famous Parker High School choir while attending as a student.
After serving his country in the United States Army, he performed six years with Eaton’s band, Garden of Eden, acting as arranger and co-producing songwriter for the national release, “Instant Hip.” Garden of Eden opened for Natalie Cole, The Spinners, Freddie Hubbard and Ramsey Lewis.
As co-owner and performer for the Birmingham band Between the Two, Talley toured for 12 years in the United States, Japan, Denmark and Greenland.
He has supplied his talents to other bands and received numerous awards for his songwriting talents, including national recognition by ASCAP (The American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers). He has also rendered his musical services to various charity projects.
Talley and Lopez have performed as Goodfellas throughout the Southeast, specializing in jazz, pop and R&B.
The Wild and Wonderful Wednesday series program is free and open to the public.
