TALLADEGA -- Talladega police are searching for a man who led them on a high-speed chase Wednesday before escaping into a heavily wooded area on an all-terrain vehicle.

The suspect is described as a black male in his 20s wearing black sweatpants, a gray zip-up jacket over a red hooded sweatshirt and a red helmet. He was driving a black ATV with some fluorescent green trim, according to Lt. Jimmy Thompson.

Thompson said patrol officers initially pulled over two men on ATVs on West Battle Street. It is not legal to drive an ATV on a city street.

One of the two riders stopped, but the other took off and was initially able to evade police. He was spotted again on the 275 Bypass, and a high-speed chase ensued.

Police cars followed the ATV down the old bypass to Plant Road and then to Renfroe Road. After reaching Honeysuckle Lane in Alpine, the ATV turned off the main road and into a heavily wooded area that appeared to be part of a private hunting club. The police cars could not follow on the rough terrain, and the suspect got away. The pursuit was called off shortly after, Thompson said.
