SYLACAUGA -- Recently, the Sylacauga Police Department has received numerous complaints about vehicles with loud exhaust or mufflers.
The department is using its Facebook page to educate the public about these vehicles. The department is encouraging the public to read the Alabama Code that deals with mufflers/exhaust on motor vehicles.
Under Section 32-5-216:
Mufflers; prevention of noise, smoke, etc., the code reads:
Every motor vehicle shall at all times be equipped with a muffler in good working order and in constant operation to prevent excessive or unusual noise and annoying smoke, and no person shall use a muffler cut-out, bypass, a muffler without baffles or similar device upon a motor vehicle on a highway.
The engine and power mechanism of every vehicle shall be so equipped and adjusted as to prevent the escape of excessive fumes or smoke.
The SPD will be conducting extra enforcement for vehicles violating this code. Violators will be issued citations.
