CHILDERSBURG -- Dr. Juanakee R. Adams, a guest of Sis. Patricia Snow, spoke in recognition of Black History Month on Sunday, Feb. 18, at Mountain Grove Baptist Church in Childersburg, where the Rev. Robert Hatten is pastor.

In 1980, Adams became the first African-American female optometrist to set up her own practice in Birmingham and the state of Alabama. She shared with the congregation the trials and struggle to do so, as there was no place for her to practice in the city.

Adams is the CEO of Adams Eye Care in Birmingham. She is the founder of the Juanakee Adams Initiative for Excellent Eye Care and Optimum Health and is the leader of the Eye Care Team of Optometrists and Ophthalmologists to Ghana, Africa. She has been taking monthly medical mission trips since 2003 to serve impoverished counties in Alabama's Black Belt. Adams also is also an ordained and licensed minister.
