Congratulations are in order for the Sylacauga Lady Aggies basketball team for advancing all the way to the 5A championship game in Birmingham over the weekend. While the girls would have preferred the top prize, they can certainly take pride in reaching rare heights of success on the court. The loss in the championship game was only their second loss all season, while winning 23 games.

Team leader Shakayla Thomas has already agreed to play college ball for Florida State, and leaves a legacy and records to inspire others, with the encouragement that anyone can do it if they’re willing to put in the work. Thomas is the best rebounder in Alabama girls’ high school basketball history and the fourth highest scorer. Coach Derrick Crawford, Thomas, and players Tainiya Garrett, Destiny Wilson, Amber Ritter, Kiara Pope, Keria Looney, Ebony Mitchell, Tierra Dark, Enichisa Riggins, Briasia Richardson, Kayla Dark, Yamesha Powell and Morgan O’Neal made this a red-letter season for their school and made their community proud of their achievements.

We commend them for their hard work and achievements.
