SYLACAUGA -- Members of the board of directors of the Sylacauga Healthcare Authority recently received certification through the Alabama Hospital Association.
The Alabama Hospital Trustee Certification Program was developed to help hospitals ensure their governing board members are meeting basic criteria in terms of knowledge and participation. It is strictly a voluntary program and is administered jointly by the participating hospital, Coosa Valley Medical Center, and the Alabama Hospital Association.
Most hospital governing board members are often overwhelmed with jargon, complicated reimbursement formulas and the responsibility of ensuring quality health care for residents in their community, according to information on the program through the Alabama Hospital Association.
The certification program is a voluntary program designed to assist hospital trustees in improving their performance. Not only does it challenge trustees to achieve a higher standard of governance, but it demonstrates to lawmakers, physicians, hospital employees and the general community a commitment to hospitals and their patients and to best practices, according to a press release from the Alabama Hospital Association.
By documenting compliance with governance standards, hospital leaders assure key stakeholders like lenders, bond rating agencies, government officials that they hold themselves to a higher standard.
The program works by having hospital trustees complete a self-assessment that measures participating, basic knowledge, continuing education and other skill sets vital to effective governance.
“We are extremely pleased that the members of the Sylacauga Healthcare Authority who serve as the Board of Directors for CVMC pursued and accomplished the Trustee Board Certification,” said Glenn C. Sisk, chief executive officer of Coosa Valley Medical Center. “This serves as a testament to their commitment to the successful ongoing operations of our hospital but also their in-depth understanding of the oftentimes complex and ever-changing healthcare landscape. Most importantly, however, we value their continued guidance and support for the team of caregivers at CVMC along with their commitment to the patients and guests who entrust us with their healthcare needs.”
Sylacauga Healthcare board members are Dr. Stephen Bowen, chairman; John Floyd, secretary/treasurer; Honorable retired judge Jerry Fielding, vice chairman; Jesse Cleveland; Dr. William D. Mims; and Wallace Shoemaker.
