On an unassuming stretch of Grist Mill Road in Alpine, just off the side of the road is a sign that says “Ireland Farms.” Scott Ireland and friend John Riddle teamed in their interest in agriculture and farming. Despite having never grown anything, Ireland created the base for Ireland Farms, an organic vegetable farm providing fresh locally produced vegetables and herbs to the community. Now with four guys helping out on the sprawling farm, the team grows and sells an immense variety of vegetables, including heirloom tomatoes, eggplant, peppers, salad greens, beets and melons. Now in their second year, the farm sells directly to many Birmingham restaurants proudly using local produce. The operation makes use of four large greenhouse tunnels for tomatoes and other towers of plants while others grow in well-organized rows in the sun. You can find Ireland Farms produce at a number of local farmers markets in Talladega,  Anniston and Birmingham.
