A 5-year-old boy north of Talladega died this morning from what appears to be an accidental gunshot.
Talladega Police Chief Jason Busby said the child was transported to the emergency room at Brookwood Baptist Health Center/ Citizens Baptist Médical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
"All we can say right now is that early this morning, a 5-year-old boy suffered a single gunshot wound to the chest area," Busby said. "Although the case is still under investigation, it initially appears to have been an accidental shooting. But any time someone dies of other than natural causes, we always investigate it fully."
Few details of the investigation were released this afternoon. The weapon involved was a handgun, and the child was in his home with a family member at the time.
The child's name and address are being withheld until all immediate family members have been properly notified.
