LOGAN MARTIN LAKE – Authorities found the body of a Talladega man who was last seen alive when he dove off a boat and into the lake Saturday night.

St. Clair County Sheriff’s Department Undersheriff Billy Murray said rescue workers found Kent Wesley Franklin, 49, of Talladega near the mouth of Rabbit Branch on Logan Martin Lake Monday afternoon.

Authorities had searched the lake Saturday night and Sunday.

Authorities set up a command post at Pier 59 Restaurant and Lounge in South St. Clair County, which is in the general area of where the body was found.

Murray said the victim was with five other adults and a juvenile when he dove off the boat and into the water.

He said people on the boat heard him making a couple of noises in the water, but could not locate Franklin and called 911.

Murray said the incident happened about 9:30 p.m. Saturday.

He said 911 received a call for assistance at about 11 p.m. Saturday and the search for the man began.

Murray said authorities organized a large search party Sunday morning to try and locate Franklin. The search was called off late Sunday when the weather deteriorated.

He said there were about 15 rescue units from across Alabama participating in the search for Franklin, including rescue personnel from Pell City and Riverside.

Murray said rescue personnel also used sonar and cadaver dogs in the search.

The area where Franklin’s body was found was near the main river channel.

Murray said alcohol was involved in the incident.

St. Clair County Deputy Coroner Jeremiah Gilreath was called in, but the cause of death has not determined.

The body will be sent to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences in Huntsville.
