TALLADEGA -- The block party that was to conclude April in Talladega 2018 was canceled Saturday night due to the potential for inclement weather.
The cancellation was posted on the event’s website around 2 p.m. The post said, “Unfortunately, we must cancel the block party. The weather just looks bad.”
Later Saturday afternoon, Andrea Montgomery, president of the Talladega Pilgrimage Committee, expressed the panel’s disappointment in having to cancel.
“We wanted to push on with the party, but our two big attractions called earlier Saturday and canceled because of the potential for bad weather. The band that was playing was coming from Nashville, (Tennessee), and the vendor with the inflatables both canceled. We had no choice,” Montgomery said.
She said committee members talked and talked, back and forth, Saturday about holding the block party, saying it had been such a family-oriented, fun event.
“This party was something to get families involved with April in Talladega. It was a fun event and so popular. We are saddened we had to cancel. We’re really sorry. We worked so hard and had lots of vendors,” Montgomery said.
She said anytime you have an outdoor event in April in Alabama, you just take a chance it won’t rain.
“We don’t control the weather,” she said. “I’m an optimist at heart and thought we could do it.”
Montgomery said there are no plans to reschedule the block party.
