TALLADEGA -- A wreck on lap 27 took out Cup playoff contender Jamie McMurray at the Alabama 500.

McMurry was trying to move to pit road when Erik Jones, the No. 77 car, hit him. The wreck caught Kyle Busch, Jeffrey Earnhardt, Mark Thompson, Jones and McMurray. All five drivers missed the rest of the race.

"My fault," McMurray said. "I assumed that they said the 18 (Busch) was going to let me in, so I thought we all were going to pit. I didn't even know where the 77 was. When I got on the brakes, I thought we all were coming to pit road as a group. ... Obviously, not everyone was."

McMurray entered the race eighth in the points standings. After next week's race in Kansas, the playoff field will be cut from 12 to eight. McMurray severely damaged his hopes of moving forward, as he was only eight points ahead of 12th-place Ricky Stenhouse Jr.
