Jacksonville State athletics director Greg Seitz said Tuesday he doesn’t know who the Gamecocks’ opponent will be for the season-opening FCS Kickoff game, despite a STATS report that says ESPN is putting the finishing touches on a JSU vs. North Carolina A&T matchup.
Seitz said ESPN is coordinating the game, which will be Aug. 25 in the Cramton Bowl in Montgomery. JSU is set to play in the game for the second straight year, but ESPN hasn’t announced an opponent. Seitz added that he doesn’t have a contract for the game yet.
“I told ESPN we’re open to playing anybody,” Seitz said. “I’m sure they’re looking for a marquee matchup.”
Jacksonville State played in last season’s FCS Kickoff game, beating Chattanooga 27-13. The Gamecocks went 10-2 and won the Ohio Valley Conference championship for the fourth straight year before losing in the second round of the FCS playoffs.
North Carolina A&T went 12-0 this past season, winning the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and beating Grambling State 21-14 in the Celebration Bowl, which essentially serves as a national championship game for Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
North Carolina A&T head coach Joe Broadway has retired after seven years at the school. In 15 seasons as a head coach, he won four HBCU national titles. Sam Washington, a member of Broadway’s staff, was promoted to head coach.
