MIAMI — Jacksonville State scored six times in the top of the 12th inning Friday to beat Florida International 12-6 in the first game of a three-game weekend series.
JSU (7-2) has won three straight.
With reliever Gio Soto taking over for FIU, Taylor Hawthorne began the 12th inning for JSU by getting hit by a pitch. After Trent Simpson struck out and Hawthorne stole second, Andrew Naismith was intentionally walked.
Nic Gaddis singled home Hawthorne, and Isaac Alexander followed by driving home Naismith with a single to make it 8-6. Chase Robinson added an RBI single of his own to score Gaddis.
Cole Frederick reached on an error to bring home Alexander.
Nolan Greckel walked, and Clayton Daniel's sacrifice fly scored Robinson. Frederick scored later on a wild pitch.
Hawthorne struck out to end the inning.
Austin Brewster (2-0) pitched the last 5 2/3 innings and didn't allow a run. He gave up two hits and struck out four.
Naismith and Alexander each went 3-for-5, with Alexander getting JSU's only extra-base hit with a double.
Robinson was 2-for-4 with three RBIs. Frederick was 2-for-5. Greckel didn't get a hit but he walked twice.
JSU had grabbed a 5-1 lead after scoring four times in the top of the third. Hawthorne and Naismith each singled home a run. Gaddis and Robinson each had a sacrifice fly.
FIU added a run each in the third, fourth and fifth innings to make it 5-4.
JSU scored a run in the top of the sixth, but FIU managed two runs in the bottom of the seventh.
