High school basketball teaser

Behind a balanced scoring effort, the Piedmont boys basketball team defeated Westbrook Christian 54-47 Saturday.

After leading by just one point at halftime, the Bulldogs outscored Westbrook 28-22 in the second half.

Piedmont (14-2) hosts Weaver on Tuesday.

Piedmont girls 71, Westbrook Christian 40: The Bulldogs jumped out to a 42-20 lead after the first half and never looked back.

Three weight-class champions helped Alexandria to the team title in the prestigious Arab Invitational tournament Saturday. The Valley Cubs scored 181.5 points. Mae Jemison of Huntsville finished second with 164 points.

Alexandria’s Christian Knop (39-0) pinned Mae Jemison’s Diaris Donaldson at 2:17 in the 195-pound championship match. It was career victory No. 300 for Knop. He has now won 214 consecutive matches. Jaden New ran his record to 37-1 by pinning Arab’s Patrick Lawler at 3:08 for the 132-pound title. Fletcher Swindall took the 126-pound championship with a 6-2 decision over Samuel Jaggears of Gadsden City and is now 31-1. Skyler Payne lost a 1-0 decision to Matt Burrows of James Clemens and finished second in the heavyweight division. Alexandria’s Peyton Thrasher was fourth at 220 pounds.

The Valley Cubs will wrestle Moody at Southside on Thursday in the opening round of the AHSAA state duals tournament.
