In a 40-7 win over Decatur Heritage, Spring Garden scored five unanswered touchdowns in the second half and advanced to the second round of the Class 1A playoffs. A 69-yard touchdown pass from Ryley Kirk to Cooper Austin with 3:32 to play in the third quarter put the Panthers up 14-7, breaking a 7-7 halftime deadlock.

Spring Garden(10-1) added four touchdowns in the fourth quarter. Luke Welsh opened the fourth with his second touchdown of the game on a 4-yard run. Welsh’s 12-yard scoring run had the Panthers ahead 7-0 with four minutes to go in the first quarter. Decatur Heritage knotted the score five minutes into the second period.

Weston Kirk scored on a 12-yard run, Landon Gowns returned a fumble recovery 22 yards to make it 33-7 and Andrew Floyd closed the scoring with a 14-yard scamper.

Spring Garden entertains Waterloo (9-2) next Friday.
