I don’t know about you, but I’ve had a mental countdown going for several weeks.
The end of summer here also means fall sports are nearly back. To say it more directly — football, ladies and gentlemen, is almost back.
Saying fall sports is probably the better way to go, but volleyball will never get its due in this football-crazed state. It’s just not possible. Nonetheless, I’m excited for it, too.
#TeamStar will be there for both sports, but while volleyball season has not started, football season arrived long ago. We’ve been grinding out team previews for the last several weeks.
But, for games, everyone will have to wait a little more than a week. Oxford opens the season for Calhoun County on Aug. 21 against Southside on the road and after that begins the three-month marathon of football.
Fans can have a love-hate relationship with football depending on how certain teams do, but for sports writers, every season is enjoyable. Outside of watching (and secretly enjoying) players and coaches we have come to know so well succeed and make playoff runs, we have no dog in the fight.
While we’ll never be disappointed in how area teams do each fall, right now every team has a chance to have a special year. There’s pure anticipation in the air after a long, lackluster summer.
This is the greatest time of the year.
