The annual Rock Run Christmas Parade is set for 3 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 16. The Journal couldn’t find anyone who actually knows how long the parade has been going on, but everyone agrees that it’s been a long time.

The lineup will start at Rock Run Baptist Church and go behind the church. According to Mike “Cat” Kines, those attending can expect to see “some good stuff.” Wes Wyatt who hosts Absolutely Alabama on Fox 6 will be on hand. Mayfield Dairies of Birmingham will send their popular 13’ cow and will hand out ice cream. Several car clubs are expected and as well as many floats.

The Rock Run Baptist Church will again prepare the food. The word is that it will probably be cornbread with soup or chili.

Kines is one of four who is coordinating the parade. The others are Grady Rhinehart, David Pike and Rick Freeman. Not one person is entirely responsible for the parade, Kines stressed.

“It’s a community thing,” he said. “There are so many who work so hard on it. We’re the only sanctioned parade for the Shriners.”

Last year there were 431 entries. It’s not clear yet how many there will be this year, but those attending won’t be disappointed, according to Kines. Several fire departments will be there, including Cherokee County’s, Sandy Creek’s and McCord’s Crossroads. Law enforcement will also attend. The Cherokee County Sheriff’s Department and police department will attend.

Kines will be there in his camouflaged truck. He and others will throw out stuffed animals and candy for children.

He said people come from all over, even Georgia. He said the Rock Run parade is bigger than Centre’s, Piedmont’s or the Cartersville, Ga., parades.

“The only thing we can’t get is a band,” he said. “We’re still working on it.”

There is no fee to enter the parade. Rhinehart said that if anyone would like to make a donation, it would be greatly appreciated. At a recent parade, enough money was raised to purchase a flagpole and a flag for a cemetery in the area.
