Piedmont Medical Center, located at 32 Roundtree Drive, next to Piedmont Healthcare Center, is open four days a week. Nurse Practitioner Cari McAlister sees patients from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Monday, Tuesday and Friday and from 8 a.m. - noon on Wednesday. She sees patients from 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Thursday in the office of Dr. Mohammad Zaman at Jacksonville Family Medicine, 1555-C Pelham Rd. S., in Jacksonville.

McAlister has worked in a number of medical positions. Before assuming her current job, she was a nurse practitioner at Anniston OB-GYN. Prior to that, she worked as a registered nurse in day surgery and pre- admission testing at Gadsden Regional Medical Center for 13 years. She has worked in labor at delivery at Riverview Hospital in Gadsden and Regional Medical Center in Anniston. McAlister also worked on the surgical floor at Riverview. While she was working on her nursing degree, she worked as a nursing assistant at Riverview.

McAlister said she decided that she wanted to be able to help people more than a nurse could and that would require more education.

“When I was working in pre-admission testing, a lot of patients I would see didn’t understand why they were taking certain medications,” she said. “I wanted to be able to help them understand their health conditions, the medications needed, and how they might could improve these health conditions.”

Seventeen years after she received her nursing degree from Jacksonville State University, she received her master’s in nursing and became a dual board-certified nurse practitioner. She then continued her education and obtain her doctor of nursing practice from UAB.

Working with McAlister in Piedmont are medical assistant Nicole McCord and receptionist Tori Waddell. Her husband, Jason, is a retired Gadsden fire fighter. Their daughter, Alexandra, 17, is home schooled by her father, and their younger daughter, Katie, 15, is a student at Hokes Bluff High.

McAlister said she feels confident in caring for her patients.

“If I ever have any questions, I know I can call Dr. Zaman and he’ll answer them for me,” she said.

McAlister can be reached at 256-792-9322.
