Volleyball season begins tomorrow for the Piedmont Bulldogs as Piedmont travels to Ranburne for a tri-match with host Ranburne and Saks. The varsity team will relax Saturday while the junior high squads host a tournament that begins at 8 a.m. The varsity Bulldogs return to action on Sept. 4 at Wellborn in their first area match of the year.

“I had a better summer than I had anticipated in two aspects,” volleyball coach Grace Strott said. “One, team unity and then, two, just all-out hustle and play. They never gave up at our play dates, never. What we have to work on is our passing to target, off of serve receive and all the way around. ”

Four seniors will lead the Bulldogs. Carlie Flowers and Riesha Thompson will be the primary outside hitters. Bre Green and Ashlynne Rivers will set and be on the right side.

Keshauna Jones, Jaylen Major, Torre Roberts and Madeline Winstead are juniors. Winstead and Major will play on the left side and Major may also see some time as a defensive specialist. Roberts will be the libero and Jones will play back row defense.

Strott will have three sophomores. Athletic Breanna Brazier could be at left side hitting, at right side setting or come into the game to serve. Cheyenne Law also has a strong serve. Cherish Boswell will be one middle.

At the other middle will be Sydney Prater, an eighth-grader.

Reclassification left Piedmont and Weaver in Class 3A but former area foes Saks and White Plains are now 4A. Moving up from 2A to join the Bulldogs and the Bearcats will be Pleasant Valley and Wellborn.

“It’s going to be tough,” Strott said of the new area, “just as tough as it was with White Plains and Saks.”
