I beg Sens. Doug Jones and Richard Shelby to do everything in their power to end the rampant gun violence in this country. I understand it’s not an easy issue to solve, but it’s past time to start tackling the hard issues. I ask both for programs that provide more effective support for people with mental-health issues and for stricter regulations on buying, selling and owning guns.

My mother is a teacher at an Alabama public high school. My nieces and nephew attend public schools. Over and over, I have seen the aftermath of these unthinkable tragedies, and all I can think is next time it could be one of them. Next time, it could be all of them. The thought terrifies me. I confess I don’t know what the best answer is, but I do know that what we have done so far is the wrong answer. If what we are currently doing was working, those children in Florida would be in class today.

Have we not wasted enough precious blood protecting the National Rifle Association and other gun lobbyists? How is this different than the Canaanites sacrificing their children to Moloch?
