It used to be that manufacturing jobs were a guaranteed shot at a middle-class life. But take it from me, those days are disappearing.

I work at an auto-supplier factory in Piedmont, CVG Alabama, where the pay starts at roughly $10 an hour — not much higher than what you see at Walmart or McDonald’s.
