The former Annistonian running for governor in South Carolina has received an important endorsement from Alabama's newest U.S. senator.

Sen. Doug Jones, D-Birmingham, has endorsed Phil Noble Jr., who is running as a Democrat in his state, according to the Post and Courier of Charleston. Noble is the son of well-known Anniston pastor Phil Noble, who was instrumental in the city's weathering of the civil rights movement in the 1960s. Noble Sr.'s book, Beyond the Burning Bus, details those years in Anniston.

"My win was a step — and now the next fight is Phil’s for governor in South Carolina," Jones said in an email this week to Democratic supporters. "I know Phil is a truly principled, progressive leader committed to real reform — something I know is sorely needed in South Carolina’s state government."

Noble Jr. is a Charleston-based political and business consultant who lived in Anniston from the age of 5 until 20.
