Billy Graham, one of America's most renowned and beloved religious figures, died this morning. He was 99.
Did you know he spoke at Fort McClellan on Aug. 21, 1954?
"In his first public appearance since June 27th in Berlin, Evangelist Billy Graham told a jam-packed Fort McClellan amphitheater crowd last night that the time for decision for Christ is here -- and now," is how The Star's Cody Hall began his coverage of that Saturday night sermon. (To read the story, click through the photos at the top of this page.)
"While an overflow crowd of civilians and National Guardsmen listened -- many standing on the hillside around the amphitheater -- the dynamic North Carolinian went back to the Old Testament for his text and told his listeners: 'I offer you the same God, the same Christ, that Joshua offered the people of Israel 4,000 years ago. You must decide now."
