Around here, football sits atop the caste system of sports. Nothing tops it, ever, in any way, the archaic stereotype goes. But isn’t a state title in another sport just as impressive?

Darn-tootin’ it is.

So let’s celebrate the Oxford Yellow Jacket wrestlers, who last week won their second straight Class 6A state duals title in Birmingham. A white-knuckle victory over Gardendale, 30-23, did the trick.

What’s more, let’s hope Oxford’s championship kick-starts a spring season of state titles for Calhoun County schools. Bringing home a few trophies in basketball, baseball, softball and the like sounds mighty good to us.
