Editorial: We should return to Philippines, pay more attention to Asian allies than China


"I shall return" were the words of Gen. Douglas MacArthur in 1942 as he left the Philippines during World War II. MacArthur kept his promise, and on Oct. 20, 1944, he returned. This memorial in Leyte, Philippines, stands as a reminder of the liberation from the Japanese.

The Philippines has been America’s top ally since it gained independence from the U.S. after World War II.

Filipinos always have regarded us as their protector, first from the imperialist Japanese, now from the communist Chinese.
